Gear for workshop in El Salvador

Three weeks ago Steven St. John and I conducted a workshop in El Salvador, more specifically on the island of Meanguera. The trip was filled with wonderful people and spectacular weather. The humidity was something to get used to but overall the workshop was a success. Pictured is most of the gear I took on the trip including a medium format camera, film, laptop,lightmeter, mini tripod and an external microphone for a Canon 7D. I’ll be posting some images in the days to come.

Hurricane Katrina Anniversary

Five years ago I was lucky enough to be sent along with another photographer to cover Hurricane Katrina but instead of heading to New Orleans I and reporter Lloyd Jojola decided to cover the town of Biloxi, Mississippi where not only did it flood, it was wiped off the map! This is a slide show of what we saw for four days in the general area.

Willard’s Centennial Celebration

The town of Willard sits some 70 miles from Albuquerque and this past weekend it celebrated it 100th anniversary with several events including a shooting demonstration. But the most interesting story I came across was that of Meliton Otero who had an interesting story regarding his great uncle who happened to be Japanese and living in New Mexico during WW II. His uncle along with some other Japanese managed to hide on a mesa just south of town where they wouldn’t be found and be relocated to interment camps. “White man’s moccasins,” is an image most of us have seen whether on a t-shirt or a poster. It shows a Native American man taking in the sun with a cigar on his hand wearing Keds high tops basketball shoes. The photo was taken by Lee Marmon who lives in the pueblo of Laguna just west of Albuquerque. Though this is his most famous image, Marmon photographed many scenes around the Southwest that became iconic. Read Leslie Linthicum’s story for all the details about this photographer. What you see below is a him holding that famous image taken more than 50 years ago.

LOTUS EVORA AND A DEAD BIRD

Some assignments I cover are not very news worthy and really don’t deserve much attention but the personal experience gathered leaves you feeling grateful for the job you have. This was the case when I headed to Sandia Raceway just west of Albuquerque. The story involved two business school Deans racing each other on the track as a way to celebrate the school’s involvement in offering marketing ideas to the racetrack facility for better marketing. Well, the story was not that interesting but what was super cool was that I got to ride in a brand new Lotus Evora, a car that’s just hitting the market. Check out the video below. In the end the assignment was worth it but unfortunately there was some collateral damage.

Route 66 Micro Car Rally

Heading back to the office and I spotted the Route 66 Micro Car Rally traveling through Albuquerque on their way to Chicago from Los Angeles. Wished I had known about this event. Would have made a cool multimedia piece. Check out their facebook page: Micros On Route 66 is on Facebook

driving around with nothing to do on a Thursday afternoon. Do I just sit in my car and watch this kid walk by or do walk up to him and say “hi, nice hair.” “Can I take your picture?”

U.S-MEXICO BORDER

Traveled a couple of weeks ago with reporter Rene Romo to try and illustrate a story about how the El Paso sector of the Border Patrol is apprehending less and less border undocumented workers in the area. It was a quick trip and had only a couple of hours to try and illustrate this issue. We traveled to Sunland Park, New Mexico where the community backs up against the border fence with the Mexican neighborhood of Anapra just a stone throw away. We spoke with a few border agents who were patrolling the border in a unit that looked to have been used in a ‘Mad Max’ movie with a steel cage to protect the agents from rock throwers from the other side. Some kids were hanging around the fence trying to score a Subway sub from the agents as they drove past them during their lunch hour. You can read Rene’s article here.

White Sands and Lightroom

Just posting a quick pick from a color raw file then converted to black and white using Adobe’s Lightroom. The photo was taken at White Sand’s National park in southern New Mexico. I’ll be posting picks from my trip down to southern New Mexico from a trip two weeks ago.

Roadtrip Nation RV Burns Up In Albuquerque

The folks from Roadtrip Nation had some unfortunate luck while traveling cross country through Albuquerque Saturday afternoon when their RV caught fire and burned to a crisp on the side of I-25. These are the folks you see on PBS going around the country interviewing common people “to support, empower and encourage individuals who want to define their own roads in life.” Check out their website: Roadtrip Nation.
